Shoulder Tendonitis
Treatment
Good shoulder function is essential for many popular sports.
Racquet sports and most ball sports rely on normal shoulder
function. These sports involves repetitive activity of the
shoulder, such as tennis serving or throwing, causes a built up
of stress and strain on the shoulder joint. Other sports such
as football, can cause considerable force upon the joint. All
of these activities can cause you to develop rotator cuff
tendinitis.
Rotator cuff tendinitis is one of the most popular cause of
shoulder injury in athletes.
The rotator cuff are four muscles which all act together to
help stabilize and move your shoulder joint effectively.
Without these muscles, you will have no control your shoulder
joint. If one of these muscles gets injured, the other muscles
will try to compensate for the damage muscles and eventually
the rest of the muscle will get tired and strained, therefore
making the problem worse.
Eventually, the person will have a lot of trouble with
activities of daily living such as:
- Unable to sleep well at night. They wake up at night if
they suddenly lie on their sore shoulder.
- Unable to reach for objects above the head. For
example, it will be very difficult for them to place
- clothes on a clothesline or reaching for a book above
the head, etc.
- Problems with putting their clothes on. In addition,
for women, placing a bra behind is hard because
- they are unable to reach behind their back.
- If they are using a manual car, using the car stick is
difficult.
If you think you have rotator cuff tendinitis, go see your
local health professional as soon as possible. The symptoms can
last for weeks or months if its not treated promptly.
There are two components to shoulder tendinitis treatment. The
first component is to decrease the amount of inflammation by
applying NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), heat,
ultrasound and magnetic therapy. The second component of
treatment is to correct the muscular weakness and tightness by
performing shoulder muscle strengthening and stretching
exercises. It is also best to review the sport technique you
are doing to avoid straining the shoulder.
